Our British Sign Language (BSL) Plan 2024-30

Watch: Our BSL Plan 2024-30 (BSL)

British Sign Language (BSL) is the primary language for many children and young people in Scotland and it is crucial that children and young people are supported to access the language of their choice at any age.

Our BSL Plan sets out:

  • the actions we will take to promote and protect the rights of young BSL users
  • how we will involve young BSL users in our work

To create this Plan we worked in partnership with Solar Bear, Scotland’s Deaf Youth Theatre to work with Deaf children and young people and young BSL users. This informed both our office’s Strategic Plan and our BSL Plan. Solar Bear created and delivered a series of workshops exploring the group’s individual views and experiences of rights, which the Commissioner and other members of our team took part in.

We reviewed our draft BSL Plan with help from National Deaf Children’s Society, British Deaf Association Scotland, and Solar Bear.

We want to thank all the children and young people who have taken the time to work with us to inform this Plan.
