Statement: Food insecurity

In a statement to the PA, Children and Young People’s Commissioner Bruce Adamson said: “Poverty is the most significant human rights issue affecting children in Scotland and food insecurity impacts every aspect of a child’s life, including their education and mental and physical health.

“Children tell us about the real stigma of living with food insecurity and about the deep worries they have when they can see their parents struggling to feed the family. The Scottish Government has mitigated against some of the welfare cuts implemented across the UK, but they can and must do more to protect children’s rights – including by giving them legal protection through incorporating the UN Convention on the Right of the Child into domestic law.”
