Nicola Killean, the Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland, said: “We welcome the UK Supreme Court’s decision in the Rwanda case, which reaffirms the UK’s obligations under a range of international human rights treaties.
“Since the Illegal Migration Act was passed earlier this year, children and young people in Scotland have been living under the cruel threat of deportation when they turn 18. Today that threat has receded.
“However, it has not disappeared. The Illegal Migration Act remains on the statute books and we remain seriously concerned about the potential for it to have a catastrophic impact on children’s human rights here in Scotland. If the UK Government does not take the opportunity to rethink its approach, the Scottish Government and local authorities must do all they can within devolved powers to mitigate its impact.”
