Statement: Commissioner on access to water in schools

In a statement, Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland, Bruce Adamson, said:

“No child should be denied access water due to Covid-19 restrictions. Access to water is a human right and it is essential to a child’s right to health, and to fully realising their right to education. Education authorities in Scotland are required by law to provide drinking water to children in schools and no emergency law or policy brought in during the pandemic has changed this. As such, schools should feel confident in providing children access to water and Councils should communicate this message urgently to ensure that children’s human rights are not breached.”
